The CPS Playoffs have brought us great games throughout and an awesome field in both the quarterfinals as well as the semifinals. Two of the state’s top teams have made it through to the finals in Morgan Park and Whitney Young. They will meet on Friday at Chicago State for the championship.
Morgan Park won a thriller on Wednesday night in a 54-53 overtime win against rival Simeon in the semifinals. Their senior guard trio showed up big in the win as Kyle Davis (15 points), Markee Williams (12 points), and Billy Garrett (11 points) all played key roles in their victory.
Whitney Young had a dominant performance in their semifinal against Orr. They jumped out quick and never looked back. Junior center Jahlil Okafor showed why he is the nation’s premier 2014 prospect scoring at will on the block and grabbing tons of rebounds going for 26 points and 13 boards. LJ Peak also had a nice game going for 16 points.
These two teams have very different strengths. Morgan Park’s guard trio is going to be where the majority of their production comes from. They are their primary scorers and playmakers. Xzavier Taylor, Lamont Walker, and Josh Cunningham will have to have big games on the boards and defensively against Whitney Young’s front line. Look for one of these guys to have a big game offensively for the Mustangs to get the win.
The Dolphins will attempt to use their advantage in the paint with the nation’s top big man. When Jahlil Okafor touches the ball good things happen so expect him to get a lot of looks throughout this contest. LJ Peak and Paul White will try to attack and get to the hoop. Their backcourt of Miles Reynolds and Ausar Madison are great with producing in the opportunities given. If one of them is left open they can get hot from the outside.
This is going to be another great contest and features two of the top contenders for the state title in 3A and 4A.
