Illini Hold Off Georgia Southern 80-71

Illinois opened the season by grinding out a 80-71 win over Georgia Southern on Friday night behind 24 points from senior Rayvonte Rice.

The game was tied at 31-31 at halftime and Georgia Southern was within 68-64 with just over two minutes to play ahead of a a 5-0 Illini run putting the game away.

Rice connected on 8-12 shots from the floor including 3-4 shots from behind the three-point arc. Rice scored 14 points in the second half and finished the game with 6 rebounds and 3 assists in total.

Seton Hall transfer Aaron Cosby backed up Rice with 16 points in his Illini debut. Malcolm Hill and Ahmad Starks scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

Illinois will next be in action on Sunday against Coppin State.

Illini Set To Host Coppin State

Illinois (1-0) will host Coppin State (0-1) at the State Farm Center on Sunday and will look to improve on an up and down opener against Georgia Southern.

Illinois will look to turn up the defensive pressure on a Coppin State team that lost 107-65 at Oregon on Friday night.

Senior Rayvonte Rice was terrific on both ends in the opener. Ahmad Starks and Aaron Cosby should both convert a higher percentage of their shots.

The game will be broadcast on BTN Plus (Internet).

Next up for Illinois is Austin Peay who will roll into town on Friday night.

DePaul Tops UIC 72-71 On Late Triple

Billy Garrett Jr. hit a game-winning three-point basket with 6.5 seconds to play as DePaul held off UIC 72-71 in the season-opener for both teams.

Garrett's late heroics salvaged a win for DePaul after the team saw a 46-30 halftime lead evaporate.

Sophomore center Tommy Hamilton IV led DePaul with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Garrett backed up Hamilton with 12 points with Myke Henry and Forrest Robinson each bagging 11 points.

Senior guard Marc Brown led UIC with 19 points with Jake Weigand adding 15 points and 12 rebounds. Paris Burns scored 15 points in his UIC debut.

DePaul shot just 6-28 (21.4%) from behind the three-point arc and just 12-24 (50%) from the free throw line.

UIC connected on 24-29 (82.8%) of their attempts from the free throw line.
