Illinois opened the season by grinding out a 80-71 win over Georgia Southern on Friday night behind 24 points from senior Rayvonte Rice.
The game was tied at 31-31 at halftime and Georgia Southern was within 68-64 with just over two minutes to play ahead of a a 5-0 Illini run putting the game away.
Rice connected on 8-12 shots from the floor including 3-4 shots from behind the three-point arc. Rice scored 14 points in the second half and finished the game with 6 rebounds and 3 assists in total.
Seton Hall transfer Aaron Cosby backed up Rice with 16 points in his Illini debut. Malcolm Hill and Ahmad Starks scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
Illinois will next be in action on Sunday against Coppin State.
