Hoops Showdown 2013 Prospect Report

The National Guard High School Hoops Showdown on Saturday featured a nice group of prospects. In this scouting report we take a look at some of the top class of 2013 prospects in attendance.

Matt Mooney, 6’4", shooting guard (Niles Notre Dame – Committed to Air Force)
The Air Force commit was very impressive in his team’s win over St. Viator. He is best known as a plus shooter from the perimeter which he showed off in this game. Mooney has range on his shot and has a quick release. He is good at pulling up on a dime and rising up for the three. I was impressed with him off the bounce and how athletic he was. His handle is pretty good as he got in the lane including a nice runner. He got to the hoop well and used some hesitation in his game to keep his opponent off balance. The senior went for 22 points in the win on 10-14 shooting.

Donte Stephenson, 5’10", point guard (Niles Notre Dame)
Stephenson is a quick and shifty point guard that is good with the ball in his hands. He is an excellent ball handler and a prospect that pushes it in transition. This senior plays hard and brings great energy to his team. Would be a nice kid to look at for D2’s and D3’s.

Pat McInerney, 6’5", small forward (Benet – Committed to Illinois for Baseball)
This tough and hard nosed forward is the guy that does everything for his team. The first aspect that stands out is what a great rebounder he is for his size. He flies around and is always in the right spot to grab the board. The senior is a plus passer that has a great feel for the game. Overall he brings the energy level of everyone on his team up and is the ultimate do anything to win player. McInerney finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He would have been a great D2 player, but will play baseball at Illinois .

AJ Patty, 6’8", power forward ( St. Joseph ’s)
Patty showed some nice skill on the block. He had a good looking hook shot where he showed quality footwork and mechanics. Later in the game he knocked down a 15 foot face up jumper. In the paint he had trouble finishing on a couple of occasions. He did rebound well in this contest. Patty went or 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Josh McAuley, 6’7", power forward (West Aurora)
This big man has been on the rise over the last month. He is a defensive and rebounding presence that is pretty raw offensively. In this game he was in foul trouble throughout and saw limited minutes. He is pretty athletic for a big guy and has good size and strength. Would be a guy for JUCO’s to take a glance at that are looking for someone they can develop.
