Illinois had several important recruits on campus Saturday for their first exhibition game. The list included one of the nation’s top sophomores in St. Rita shooting guard Charles Matthews. He has consistently proven over and over again he is one of the elite talents not only in the state, but nationally in 2015. Matthews is a big-time scorer with plus handles and a great jumper. We caught up with him to see what he did on Saturday in Champaign.
“I went to the practice facility and hung out with the other recruits. Then went to the game and watched them play Lewis.”
The sophomore talked about his impressions of how the Illini’s guards looked.
“They shot the ball well and spaced the floor with a lot of pick and rolls.”
He says his relationship with the new coaching staff is developing nicely and has enjoyed getting to know them on several trips to campus.
“They’re cool people and they are changing the program around.”
Matthews states the coaches have told him that he would be a combo guard in their system. His St. Rita team will kick off their season at the State Farm Tournament of Champions in Peoria.
