Belleville Althoff 2016 small forward Brendon Gooch is one of the top prospects in southern Illinois regardless of class. He is a smooth wing that has a good feel for the game. As the season progressed with the Southwest Jets 15U he continued to gain more confidence and his game flourished.
Gooch has the frame that he should be able to add weight and fill out his long and lanky body. He has a smooth handle and shoots it well from mid-range. Defensively he has a chance to be very good. He has one of the highest ceilings in his class in Illinois.
Gooch spoke about his team’s spring and summer on the circuit running with one of the more talented 15U groups in the state.
“I think it went good. Did ok in some games. Others we didn’t. I think we improved as the season went along and started to get that chemistry.”
What areas did he see his game progress during the summer?
“Looking for my teammates more instead of shooting it. Making open shots, finishing around the rim, and keeping my teammates heads up. Being a good teammate.”
Although it is early in the process Gooch already has an offer from SIU-Edwardsville. He says he has received interest from Illinois, Purdue, Missouri State, SIU, and UIC.
Being one of the more intriguing prospects in the state Gooch was selected to participate against the best 2016 prospects in the nation at the Super Soph Camp in Atlanta during the summer.
“I hadn’t been to a camp before so it was a great experience. I think I matched up really well against some really good talent down there. Hopefully I will see some of them in the future.”
