Barrett Benson ranks as one of the top 2016 prospects in the state of Illinois. Last weekend, he took an unofficial visit to the campus of Georgetown, where former Northwestern associate head coach Tavaras Hardy is now on staff.
We caught up with Benson, who stands 6’9, who broke down his visit.
Break down your visit to Georgetown and how it went?
“We met in front of McDonough Arena and toured the facility. We talked with Coach Hardy in his office about the Georgetown basketball and academic tradition, and then we went around the campus in a golf cart stopping at a dorm and a few other major points on the campus. After the campus tour we had lunch with Coach Hardy to end our visit. I really enjoyed myself.”
It’s very early in the recruiting process and you have a DePaul offer, but talk about the other schools involved?
“I've been contacted by Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Marquette, Northwestern, Georgetown, UIC, Illinois, DePaul, Baylor, Stanford, OSU, and Detroit.”
A decision is a ways off, but when it does come what are you looking for in a school?
“Academics is always going to be first then I'll worry about everything else when that time comes.”
What areas of your game are you really working on right now?
“My range and ball-handling are two things I need to work on specifically and making sure everything else improves as well. I just need to stay in the gym and continue to get stronger, faster, and bigger.”
Recap your summer with the Illinois Wolves and how you felt you performed?
“It was a great summer we started off hot and played solid team ball for the whole summer. We got a lot accomplished in a small period of time and it was a summer to be proud of.”
