St. Rita senior Dominique Matthews is one of the best shooting guards in the state’s class of 2014. He is often overlooked despite coming off a monster junior campaign last season.
Matthews is a dynamic scorer that can flat out get buckets attacking the basket and with a nice pull up jumper. As the season went along he became more efficient with his shots and improved greatly as a passer as well as a defender.
We spoke with Matthews to see how July went.
“Well this summer I went to the Reebok Breakout Camp in Philadelphia. I had a great experience there and learned a lot. Played pretty well, but mainly I’ve been working out all summer and I also dd a tournament with the Chicago Mustangs in Vegas for the Fab 48 tourney. I played great in front of lots of college coaches.”
Where does he feel his game has made the most strides over the summer?
“I feel that I’ve really matured on the court making better decisions on offense and getting my teammates involved a lot more. I just let the game come to me and not try to over do it. Now I know what I’m capable of doing on the court and feel very good about where my game has come.”
He will be running with one of the most talented teams in the state this season which also includes his brother top junior Charles Matthews and Northwestern commit Vic Law. He is ready to make noise as a senior.
“I’m really looking forward to winning state and playing with the most talented team I’ve played on in such a long time.”
Some of the schools that have expressed interest in Matthews throughout the process include SMU, Toledo, UNC Asheville, and Florida Atlantic. What does he believe he can bring to a team in college?
“My strengths that can project toward the next level would be my ability to score and how I take so much pride in my defense.”
