Fenwick is going to be a team to watch this season with a new coach, the fastest rising senior in the state, and some young prospects with potential star power. One of those young prospects that made an impact last year is sophomore point guard Mike Smith.
The lead guard is quick with the rock in his hands and makes plays. He can score by slicing through the defense and is improving his perimeter jumper. Smith was one of the most impressive 2016 prospects last high school season. He spoke with us about where he saw improvements in his game during July with Meanstreets 16U.
“Probably my mental game. Like my confidence and shooting. That’s what I need to focus on and once I get those I will be improving.”
How did playing up an age level help him?
“It will help me by knowing how to play versus faster, older, and quicker guys that already have good D1 offers. I’m looking forward to playing 17U next year and this season at Fenwick.”
The sophomore was selected to participate in the prestigious Super Soph Camp during the summer as well. He performed at a high level at the camp.
“It went really well. Made Top 20 Game. It was a fun and good experience.”
Smith talked about the upcoming high school season at Fenwick.
“I’m looking forward to all the competition we have to play and to make Fenwick a school for basketball. When I told my AAU teammates that we are going to be good they don’t believe me, but they will see. I’m excited to play under a new coach, with Scottie (Lindsey), and all my teammates.”
