Class of 2015 power forward Taylor Adway impressed over the weekend at the Mac Irvin Back to School Jam. The Hillcrest forward is super athletic and quick off the floor. This is obviously evident with his ability to protect the rim on the defensive end. In one game he had four blocks in the first half.
Adway runs the floor great and showed some potential and improvement on the block. He posted up strong and showed a couple nice jump hooks. The junior fought hard in the paint and cleaned up on some offensive rebounds.
He displayed a nice touch on a face up 15 foot jumper, but was just a bit long on a few of them. Adway is a very intriguing prospect with his athleticism and potential. We spoke with the forward about how his game is developing.
“I feel I have become a lot better post player this summer. I have been working on post moves and footwork. I am still working on ball handling and shooting so I can become more of a diverse player and step out on the perimeter. The biggest thing I saw that became better was my work on the block.”
He talked about how his team is doing in open gym preparing for the upcoming season.
“We are looking good right now. We are trying to get in the gym and get unity and good chemistry. Working on a lot of individual skills to get ourselves better personally and stronger. We are going to try to get in the gym together as a team and try to get things going.”
Chicago State was the junior’s first offer. Tuesday he secured his second scholarship courtesy of an offer from Toledo.
“Toledo head coach came to one of my workouts at Hillcrest. After I got done working out he called me over and said that he likes my overall game and sees that I’m going to be a special player and said that he would like to offer me a scholarship. I was completely surprised and very happy to hear that. Toledo is a great program. Toledo has a fellow Hillcrest Hawk Julius “Juice” Brown. He’s in his junior year at Toledo and he’s doing great things over there. I was extremely honored and humbled by this.”
Who are some of the other schools that he is hearing from?
“I am being recruited by Xavier, Iowa, Tennessee, UIC, Minnesota, and Notre Dame.”
One Missouri Valley program is starting to pick up the interest.
“I just recently started getting recruited by Indiana State. Their assistant coach came to Hillcrest one day last week and talked to me.”
Adway has an upcoming visit scheduled to Xavier for their Midnight Madness. He told us what stands out about their program.
“I like their coach. I talk to their assistant coach Rick Carter. I like him. They send me stuff in the mail about all the new stuff they have in the gym. They just signed this new Nike contract. They talk about the games and how they are going to be on TV. What I have learned about them has been through the mail and talking to the coaches on the phone. I am looking forward to seeing all of this stuff when I go down there for a visit.”
Another school he plans to visit soon is Iowa.
“It is kind of like Xavier. I do not really know much about them other than what the coach tells me. I plan on going down there and checking out the school, environment, and getting to know the players that are there and the coaches a little bit better.”
What will be important in a school for him?
“First and foremost I want to make sure it is a good educational school. Make sure it is good in my major. I want to major in culinary arts because I like to cook. If I can’t major in that probably business management or sports science to stay with sports. Education is first. Second would be basketball and what kind of coach and program. The players they have produced over the years. The community, the people that go to the school, and support the school. If I feel a good vibe when I visit that is going to be a big part of where I commit too.”
