Stevenson made it all the way to the 4A title game last year where they fell to one of the state’s best teams ever. The scary part for Stevenson is their two best players were only sophomores last year. Junior guards Jalen Brunson and Connor Cashaw will look to lead their team back down to Peoria this season.
There is more help on the way in the form of 6’5” forward Justin Smith. The 2017 prospect is a good athlete with long arms that can play both the small forward and power forward positions. He runs the floor well and has shown potential on a jump shot. Smith is a high level rebounder that consistently out rebounded the other team every game we have seen him.
He spoke about how his spring and summer went on the circuit with the Illinois Wolves 15U.
“During the spring we got off to a fast start winning championships. Then they moved us up to play in the 15U to further our game and get better. We got to the championship. In the summer after playing with our high school teams we weren’t clicking at the beginning. We got back on track though.”
What does he see himself as positionally as his career progresses?
“Down the road I would like to play small forward because I have the athleticism and drive to get better.”
Smith discussed what he is looking forward to at Stevenson.
“First of all getting a good education. Secondly I would like to advance into the three spot, because they want me to play there. I also have to rebound a lot more.”
