The Chicago Elite Classic has become one of the nation’s premier events of the high school basketball season. The second annual event will take place on December 7, and is completely stacked with the top players and teams from Illinois as well as across the country.
Here are the match-ups for the event.
Whitney Young vs St. John Bosco Prep (CA)
Whitney Young comes into this season as the team to beat. They have the nation’s premier prospect in Jahlil Okafor. He is the most unstoppable force in high school basketball with his size, strength, and skill level. The big man will team up with fellow seniors Paul White (Georgetown) and Miles Reynolds (St. Louis) along with top sophomore Skyler Nash to lead the Dolphins. St. John Bosco Prep has a pair of dynamic wings in senior small forward Daniel Hamilton (UConn) and top 10 2015 guard Tyler Dorsey. Both put up buckets in a hurry!
Curie vs Bishop Gorman (NV)
This game will match up the top power forward in 2014 and the top center in 2015. Curie features the talk of the state and the nation in power forward Cliff Alexander. The athletic and powerful four man is a dominant force on both ends of the floor with his explosive slams and shot blocking. Curie also has fire power in the backcourt with sophomore Devin Gage and junior Josh Stamps who are both top 10 prospects in their classes in Illinois. Bishop Gorman center Stephen Zimmerman is considered by many the top prospect in the country in the junior class. The supremely skilled back to the basket prospect can score, pass, rebound, and block shots all at a high level. He is joined by top 50 junior Chase Jeter who saw his stock rise this summer playing with Dream Vision on the circuit.
Simeon vs Memphis Hamilton (TN)
Simeon will begin their run at a five peat with a tough out of state opponent. The Wolverines will be led by senior wings Donte Ingram and Jaycee Hillsman. Juniors DJ Williams and Edward Morrow are two of the top 2015 prospects in the state and high major recruits. Sophomores Zach Norvell, Ben Coupet, and Josh Thomas will be looked at as key contributors this season. Memphis Hamilton out of Tennessee features the Lawson brothers. Sophomore Dedric Lawson is a supremely versatile and skilled wing that lit up the circuit during the summer. He is a top 10 prospect nationally in the 2016 class. His older brother KJ Lawson (Memphis) is a top 50 recruit in 2015.
Benet Academy vs Redondo Union (CA)
Benet center Sean O’Mara (Xavier) will anchor the front line during his senior year. The strong and skilled post is one of the best center prospects in the Midwest. He can score on the block with a variety of low post moves as well as his gifted passing ability. Redondo Union has a talented group of division one prospects that is led by sophomore shooting guard Leland Green.
Marian Catholic vs Etiwanda (CA)
Talk about a great point guard matchup! Marian Catholic guard Tyler Ulis (Kentucky) lit up the summer circuit and is looking to make another statement as a senior. The exciting point guard is slick with the ball and gets everyone involved while being a tremendous playmaker. Marian Catholic returns their entire starting lineup from a quality team last season. Etiwanda has top 50 senior point guard Jordan McLaughlin (USC) who is one of the best prospects on the west coast in 2014.
St. Rita vs Gonzaga (DC)
St. Rita is loaded with high major wings Vic Law (Northwestern) and Charles Matthews leading the way. They both can put up points in a hurry and can carry their team. Dominique Matthews, Myles Carter, and Armani Chaney are also division one prospects in the starting lineup for one of the state’s top teams this season. Gonzaga is among the best teams in the DMV year in and year out. They are pushed this season by top 30 junior Bryant Crawford.
Fenwick vs Normal U-High
The only in-state matchup will be a good one. Fenwick is stacked and will be a team to watch out for this year. Their perimeter will be made up of top 2014 shooting guard Scott Lindsey (Northwestern), highly rated sophomore point guard Mike Smith, and one of the best incoming freshmen in wing Jamal Nixon. Division one prospect Dan Dwyer will anchor inside for them. Normal U-High features Keita Bates-Diop (Ohio State) who is a potential McDonald’s All-American. The skilled small forward can shoot it from the perimeter and impact the game with his length on the interior. They also have seniors Kane and Malik Wildermuth who compliment Bates-Diop well and are solid prospects in their own right.
